What Breaks Your Heart?
In his book The Hope: A Guide to Sacred Activism, Andrew Harvey offers this definition of sacred activism: “When the joy of compassionate service is married to a practical and pragmatic drive to transform all existing economic, social and political institutions, a radical and potentially all-transforming holy force is born.”
He further identifies several key components critical to the effectiveness of sacred activism:
- Asking what breaks your heart
- Forming supportive networks with others
- Practicing remembrance
- Embracing fierce feminism
- Returning to our natural state of joy as the foundation for all our actions
Harvey emphasizes joy as an essential companion to sacred activism. “As sacred activists we must embrace and embody radical joy. … The truest and deepest joy comes not only from recognizing one’s essential nature as joy, but in expressing that joy in wise, focused, radical action which implements justice, harmony, balance and compassion.”
He prays that his vision of sacred activism will give us the vision and hope needed to go through danger and difficulty with a tender heart, a peaceful mind, an increasingly supple and loving body, and a passionate, restless hunger to do all you can to preserve human and animal life on Earth.
— Barbara Doern Drew and Dr. Walter Drew offer these and more insights into the work of Andrew Harvey in the February 2019 issue of Guide for Spiritual Living: Science of Mind magazine. |

In Pursuit of a Spiritual Vision
On his website for the Institute for Sacred Activism, Andrew Harvey outlines his quest as follows: “The journey of my work and of my inner understanding has led me to the vision that will now occupy the rest of my life: that of Sacred Activism. I have founded the Institute for Sacred Activism to implement this vision, and we are in the process of co-creating a global curriculum that will be disseminated in various forms through the mass media.”
As he invites others to join in creating a new world, he says that it is his “deepest belief that only Sacred Activism — the fusion of the deepest mystical knowledge, peace, strength and stamina with calm focused and radical action – can possibly be of use now.”
The Institute for Sacred Activism consists of a one-year program with four intensives, offering a profound experience of what Sacred Activism can contribute to the inner and outer worlds, mystical practices for activists, and a deep grounding of the mystical journey as understood by major mystical traditions.
Participants work on projects linked to an area of special concern: world peace, public health, the environment, poverty, social justice, human rights, women’s rights, children’s rights, animal rights, etc. In addition to Mr. Harvey, teachers, healers and activists who exemplify Sacred Activism in their lives share their experiences as faculty.

I See the Divine Presence in All Others
— by Dr. Ernest Holmes
The best way to make friends is to realize that we meet Life in everyone. The God in us meets the God in others. Proclaiming the Divine Presence, believing in It, we shall meet It. Love will find a perfect way. …
Confidence and love alone cast out fear. The person without fear is the only truly whole person. It is ours to decide whether we shall live in fear or in faith. Let us decide to live in faith. Let us learn to practice faith until all fear disappears, until life ceases to be a funeral dirge and becomes a song of joy.
To find peace in the midst of confusion, we must realize our center in pure Spirit. To reach this place of confidence and faith in the midst of doubt and uncertainty, we should consciously unite our thought with the Divine Mind.
I know that God is within me. I know that the Spirit within me is perfect. I enter into Its peace and am secure in Its protection. The unerring judgment of Divine Intelligence directs my way. The presence of Love uplifts me and lights my life today.
