Taking an Unlikely Step
“Our world is aching for safe, invitational places, where we each feel seen, valued and welcomed,” Wayne Muller says in the September 2019 issue of Science of Mind magazine. “Doing that means we have to take that first unlikely step….”
In creating a program he calls “Nuns and Nones,” Muller had the idea to bring together nonreligious millennials and Roman Catholic nuns to see if they could find common ground on social justice activities. He wanted to explore what he calls “the magnificence of what we see and know when we collaborate.”
“I wanted to see if we could dream and wonder and feel the winds of spirit blow through us like wind through a flute,” he says. “To offer that to one another was almost effortlessly transformational.”
While unexpected and perhaps unlikely, the two groups began making immediate connections with each other. Their shared space is safe and inviting, a place where each is seen, valued and welcomed. The program is being replicated across the United States, even including a co-living pilot residence in Burlingame, California.
