Science of Mind Magazine Celebrates 90 Years
Last October, Guide for Spiritual Living: Science of Mind magazine kicked off our 90th anniversary celebration. Throughout the year, we honored our 90 years in continuous publication with a tribute to each decade of the magazine. Our October 2017 issue features Dr. Ernest Holmes on the cover and a focus on his life and work throughout the pages. The issue also takes a look at some of the efforts being undertaken by Centers for Spiritual Living communities to create “a world that works for everyone.”
“The spiral of life is upward,” Dr. Holmes wrote. “Evolution carries us forward, not backward. Eternal and progressive expansion is its law and there are no breaks in its continuity. … It seems to me that our evolution is the result of an unfolding consciousness of that which already is, and needs but to be realized to become a fact of everyday life.”
Our 90th celebration issue is being delivered to subscribers and available at Barnes & Noble stores across the United States. In this newsletter, we offer a few highlights of our celebration and invite you to pick up your October 2017 issue for a deeper look into Dr. Holmes and the journey of Science of Mind. |

The Man Behind the Philosophy
“Ernest Shurtleff Holmes, a man of inner wisdom, intuition, intelligence, curiosity and passion, had a great desire to learn about life on planet Earth, its meaning and purpose.” With that introduction, Dr. Marilyn Leo explores her personal account of Dr. Holmes’s life in the October issue of our magazine.
“During his life,” she writes, “he learned that there is a potential within everyone that far exceeds an individual’s understanding, and he wanted all people to realize their potential and attain a much higher level of living than they were experiencing. That, I believe, was one of his life goals.”
As a lifelong learner, Dr. Holmes outlined a philosophy that is a continual work in progress. “As science moves forward and brings new or additional ideas of great significance,” Dr. Leo writes, “the philosophy of Science of Mind and Spirit also brings new meaning to the lives of people everywhere.”
Dr. Holmes spent his life encouraging people to see a greater potential within themselves, to live a greater life. With a few words or a few sentences, he offered a path to living a more purposeful and abundant life.
As he once said to Science of Mind minister Obadiah Harris, “Trust yourself and relax into it.”

How to Live the Good Life
— Dr. Ernest Holmes
The training of the mind to think differently is simple enough, but I wouldn’t say that it is easy, for a thing can be simple without being easy. And again this is where faith must be used, faith in a power greater than we are, based on the firm conviction that we live in a Divine Presence which wishes only good for us, and trust God has intended that every man should be well and happy and successful. Common sense should teach us that we did not create the universe, nor need we be responsible for the laws of nature. All we can do is to use them.
But perhaps we have been using them wrongly in our ignorance, and now we are called on to reeducate our minds, to reform all our thinking, to make a complete and final surrender of all our littleness and fears and doubts and uncertainties to that great big something within us that is calm and certain and sure, that something, perhaps, that has never really left its Divine Kingdom even though our minds have become so confused, so unhappy and so filled with fear.
This is the great challenge. It is also the great adventure — the adventure of faith in a power greater than we are, the challenge of a love that abides forever.
