The Individual and the Universal
Ernest Holmes
We Individualize the Universal and Universalize the individual.
This sounds like rather an abstract statement until we understand its simplicity. The ancients said that every man is a microcosm within a Macrocosm, a little world within a Big World, or an individual within the Universal.
When Emerson said that there was One Mind common to all individual men, he reached one of the highest perceptions of the ages….He was saying in substance: “You are because God is. You live because God lives in you.” The sum total of our mental and emotional reactions surrounds us with a field of thought which is operated upon by a larger field of Mind, Law, and Action.
Each one of us individualizes the Universal Mind by our use of It.…We are individual points in the Consciousness of God or the original creative Spirit of the Universe. We are points where It thinks through us, as us….There is no wall of separation, no barrier, no place where one begins and the other leaves off….The creativity of thought is not dependent upon the thinker. Only the choice of thinking is dependent upon the thinker. The creative activity of thought belongs to the Universe.
