The Power of Prayer

We must come not only to believe and accept, but also permanently to know that there is a power greater than we are, and we can use it. Then as we affirm that we are one with the living Spirit, that God is all there is and there is nothing else, our word, being the presence and the power and the activity of that Spirit, is the law of good and cannot fail to operate. Let us feel that there is something permanent about the word we have spoken. Just as we plant a seed and walk away from it, nature takes it up, and the law of its own being evolves it, so let us believe the same thing about our word—something takes it up, something evolves it, and something will make it manifest in our experience.

You set a goal above all goals and yet
Fulfillment of the goal that God has set
That all should find themselves, grow, and expand
Until they are to God another hand,
Another eye, to see and bring to birth
New forms of beauty chiseled here on earth.

Music to Take You Beyond

The first spiritual recording made by Tina Turner, BEYOND, is a warm, inspiring invitation to go “beyond” religious differences through music. The poet Rumi teaches, “Beyond our ideas of right-doing and wrong-doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.” The music from this CD transports the listener to that field of possibility.

The collaboration features music of Buddhist prayers composed by Dechen Shak-Dagsay, a Tibetan Buddhist; traditional music and original compositions of Christian prayers by Regula Curti, a Christian; as well as chanting and readings by Tina Turner, a practicing Buddhist.

In endorsing this project, His Holiness the Dalai Lama says, “All religion teaches the virtues of love, altruism, and patience, while showing us how to discipline and transform ourselves to achieve inner peace and a kind heart. Therefore, they are worthy of our respect. Music, singing, and chanting are powerful ways to express and communicate such wholesome ideas with and among others. Bringing together corresponding pieces from Christian and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, as has been done here, will allow listeners to share in these prayers, stirring thoughts of deeper respect and peace in their lives.”

Prayer Power in Egypt

The world has watched and wondered in the past weeks as Egyptians made history calling for reform and a new government. Many have asked, what is the role of religion in bringing about this change? We have seen protestors in the streets take time to pray. We have heard stories of demonstrators on Cairo’s Tahrir Square coming together to say Coptic Christian and Muslim prayers for three hundred people who died in the protest. Clearly, religion plays an important role in these events, but is it something to be feared? The Parliament of World’s Religions offers thought-provoking dialog on this topic.
