Revealing the Gift
Julia Cameron knows how to unwrap the present. For decades, the director and revered author of “The Artist’s Way” has taught others how to peel back the layers of mundane thoughts and fears to reveal a treasure trove of present-moment gratitude and creativity.
One of the simplest ways to clean out mental “trash?” Write three pages first thing in the morning without editing yourself, as Cameron describes here. “It’s like you take a dust buster and poke it into the corners of your consciousness,” says Cameron.
When we give a (limited) voice to our banal and negative thoughts, a natural clearing happens. Superficial thinking gives way to deeper reflection and receptivity, which open us to Divine wisdom and guidance. Like a flower opening to the light, we begin to move in the direction of Spirit.

Mindfulness First, Gratitude Follows
Take a deep breath and hold it. When you can hold it no longer, let it out. How do you feel? Is it something akin to gratitude?
Focusing on gratitude without mindfulness might be putting the cart before the horse, says Dennis Merritt Jones in the November issue of Science of Mind magazine. When we make mindfulness the goal, life’s wonders automatically unfold. Gratitude follows — even on the most difficult of days.
Mindfulness also gets us off the “hedonic treadmill” where we take everything for granted, according Dr. Robert Emmons, a University of California, Davis, professor who has studied gratitude for over a decade. Watch this summary of Emmons’s findings in “The Gratitude Experiment.”

The Great Gender-Neutral Debate
In the August 2016 “Letters to the Editor,” we invited readers to weigh in on the recent change to make the language of Dr. Ernest Holmes, Science of Mind founder, gender neutral.
It’s not too late to voice your opinion here: What do you think? Does gender-neutral language help create “a world that works for everyone?” Does it make Holmes’s writings more or less poetic and meaningful to you?
Thank you for your time and opinions! Watch for survey results online on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th and in an upcoming print edition of Guide for Spiritual Living: Science of Mind magazine. |

Peace of Mind
By Ernest Holmes
Be still and know that I am God. I am the Christ, the Son of the Living God within me. I am the Principle of Peace within me. I am the manifestation of Love within me. My mind is poised in peace and beauty. All sense of fear or doubt is gone. I rest in calm trust and rely on the Law of Spirit to bring good into my experience.
I contend with none, argue with none, and am filled with wonderful peace and light. There is no uncertainty about my future and no fear as a result of my past. I live in an eternal Now which is filled with good alone. Goodness and beauty follow me. Peace and joy accompany me. Happiness and wholeness fill my entire being with the realization of love and perfection.
This is an excerpt from “The Science of Mind,” written by spiritual visionary Dr. Ernest Holmes. Read more in the November 2016 issue of Guide for Spiritual Living: Science of Mind magazine. |
