Looking at Depression through a Minister’s Eyes
—Rev. Dr. Terry Karanen
Have you been thinking about the death of Robin Williams? Many of us are still feeling raw about his transition. We're feeling sadness at how much we'll miss his humor and crazy antics. We're experiencing rage or anger that he died. Why didn't someone see this coming, or why didn't his family or friends do something?
As a minister, and also a licensed social worker, I'm well aware of the truth of just how much depression and anxiety permeates our society. Studies indicate around 16 million Americans suffer from some form of depression and most of those cases go either undiagnosed or untreated.
A psychiatrist one said that because he's a medical doctor, a death from suicide to him is no different than any other death. How can that be? Isn't that callous? He explained that the reason he felt that way is that it is still a death from a disease - the disease of depression. In that light, it is no different to him than the death of a person from the disease of kidney failure, heart failure or a brain tumor.
Ponder that a moment. Do you see depression as the dis-ease it is? READ MORE HERE |

Join Us in Creating Better Communities
An opportunity to be God in action
Saturday, Sept. 13
Are you passionate about creating a world that works for everyone? Put some power behind your passion by joining with millions of individuals and businesses around the world on Sept. 14, 2013, for World Day of Service. On that day you can join with Centers for Spiritual Living around the globe that will be giving back to their communities in powerful ways: feeding the homeless, cleaning up graffiti and volunteering with shelters to name a few.
World Day of Service follows World Day of Prayer, sponsored by Unity, and that is not by accident, says Dr. Kenn Gordon, spiritual leader of Centers for Spiritual Living. “We believe that prayer changes lives. We also believe that the only way God can accomplish anything is through us – God works in us, through us and as us. We can pray that the hungry are fed, and we do, but we also need to take action to feed the hungry. We envision a world that is free of homelessness, violence, war, and hunger. World Day of Service is about taking action in our communities around the world so together we can create that world, a world that works for everyone.” READ MORE HERE |

Peace . . . The Companion of Love
—Dr. Ernest Holmes
At the center of my being is peace. In this peace that holds me so gently I feel strength and protection from all fear, all anxiety. It is the peace of God, and underneath it all, I feel the love of the Divine Presence. I know that I have no existence apart from this love. As I become more conscious of this love, all lack, all fear, all that is false slips, away as the mists fade in the morning sunshine.
I am one with deep, abiding, peace. I know that all is well. I know that as I now permit this peace to flow through my being, through my mind and heart, every problem is released. The way is made clear before me and it is filled with joy and harmony. Today I permit my mental house to be at peace. I know that my true home is heaven and that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Today I enter into this permanent home. I consciously move in and make my dwelling place in this house of Peace.
